Language Programs

ISB currently offers three language programs. Chinese, French, and Spanish.

Chinese Language Program

The Chinese Program at ISB has expanded rapidly to meet diverse needs of all students. The program offers over 80 language classes with two tracks, Academic, and Neo-Native, ranging from primary level to advanced International Baccalaureate curriculum to serve students from K-12. The program is also committed to expose students to the unique experiences China offers and has included the China Link Program as a co-curricular activity to foster awareness, appreciation, and respect for Chinese people, language, culture, and environment.

French

ISB is one of the few international schools in Asia to offer a comprehensive French program from grade 2 to grade 12. Our primary goals are for students to achieve communicative competence and cross-cultural awareness. Our IB results at the HS level-which are consistently above the world average- reflect our commitment to being on the cutting edge of foreign language teaching and learning.

Spanish

The Spanish section of the Foreign Language Department offers three different programs of study: a regular program for non-IB students, the Accelerated program and the Ab Initio program for IB students.

Non-IB students are welcomed to initiate their language study whenever they wish. For example, seniors could register for Spanish One.

Since August 2003, grade nine students can enroll in the Language B program at standard level since they have now the option to complete the program in only four years. A Freshman has the opportunity to sign up for the Ab Initio program, then as a Junior transfer in the Language B program. Needless to say that is a very ambitious undertaking and students are asked to talk to their counselor before signing up. (A student wanting to take the course at higher level will need special permission from the Spanish teacher after two years of study, i.e. before starting his junior year.)
